<h2>Delivering for our future</h2><p>We have to invest in programs that open doors for everyone, so we invest in public schools for our children, trade schools, and colleges for adults, and we make that accessible to everyone no matter the circumstances of their birth. This is why we have public education and the SUNY and CUNY systems. We can ensure that these systems are working for us and delivering the skills and education necessary for people to provide a good life for themselves.</p><p>This requires the state to not only continue fully funding the Foundation Aid for public schools and make sure the data used to calculate that aid is accurate to the current Census, we need to expand that aid. I am for exploring the idea that the state's public education funding can come entirely from the state level and not have to rely on property taxes while maintaining local control of the funds to reflect the local school system's priorities. This would require some major reforms to be enacted with administration, but we have the ability to do so and should.</p>

It's time to live up to that promise by helping New Yorkers of all ages earn degrees, learn trades, and retrain for emerging fields.</p><p>Yet our education system needs to not only prepare people for workforce opportunities but also to encourage critical and creative thinking skills and instill a joy in learning that will serve them throughout their adult lives. Preparing for day to day living, social interactions, civics knowledge and responsibility, and the ability to express ourselves and appreciate artistic expression are all important and we need a system that enables people to fully participate in every aspect of life.</p>

<p>We've lost thousands of jobs as higher taxes have forced manufacturers to leave the state. There are limited&nbsp;opportunities for training in apprenticeship&nbsp;programs&nbsp;in fields like construction. We've been sitting by watching our main&nbsp;streets become ghost towns. New York must work with local communities to become more attractive to business and to revive our commercial districts.</p>

<p>Home ownership has become out of reach for many New Yorkers. Rising utility costs are crippling residents in our rural&nbsp;communities. And those on fixed incomes, like senior citizens and disabled veterans, are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. State government needs to protect its citizens' quality of life.</p>

By understanding that we all succeed if we help all those around us succeed he earned the respect and trust of his staff and colleagues.</p><p>In 2012 Scott and his wife, Bethany, built an alpaca farm in Palmyra, NY, making a dream they had into a reality. The idea behind the farm was to establish a place that held to sustainable farming practices with a product that had sustained an entire culture for millennia.</p><p>While working hard at his farm he also re-entered school at Monroe Community College and earned his degree in Sustainability Studies in 2016. Both working at his farm and working for his degree gave him profound insight into the challenges our society is facing, but when his eldest child turned 18 in 2016 he had a realization that they did not have the same opportunities as a young adult that he did. That realization, more than anything else, inspired him to come forward and work for everyone's ability to overcome the challenges we face.</p><p>Since then he has worked in the public sector as a clerk to the Palmyra Assessor, worked with NYS Public Health during the Covid Pandemic, was certified as a NYS Citizen Public Health Leader, and has organized to promote Women's Rights, the Rights of People of Color, Labor Rights, the New York Health Act, Justice Reform, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate Justice.</p>

<h2>Proud to be recognized as a Champion for the NY Health Act!</h2><p>The New York Health Act (NYHA) would establish a universal health system covering all New Yorkers, financed by a progressive tax and can significantly reduce overall health care spending in the state.</p><p>It gets everyone covered, can help create jobs, lower costs, and empower people to have a brighter future. I am committed to passing the NY Health Act and getting it enacted!</p>

<p>Rural New York continues getting shortchanged on resources from Albany. It's time we had a representative in the room when important decisions are being made who will make our voices heard within the majority party of state government so we are not left behind. </p><p>Responsible government involves developing trust and certainty within communities, so State government needs to be transparent as it works on behalf of all New Yorkers.</p><p>Our state senator needs to bridge divides among state government, local governments, politicians, and community groups and recognize what is an appropriate role for government in our society.</p>

<p>Health care facilities are not easily accessible for many rural New Yorkers. At the same time, hospitals in these areas are increasingly in danger of shutting down. People in rural New York have the same right to health care as those in urban areas. Every New Yorker deserves access to good-quality, affordable healthcare, regardless of where they live or their income level.</p>

<p>I am committed to serving us in the New York State Senate, bringing our true rural experience to the work and delivering the resources we need for all of our families to accomplish their goals, to enact laws and policies that remove barriers to people's success and empower them to live the lives they choose. </p>

<h2>What, exactly, do alpacas have to do with the New York State Senate?</h2><p>Good question!</p><p>Scott Comegys is an alpaca farmer and creating his alpaca farm was one of the reasons that he and his wife moved to Palmyra in Wayne County, NY. We have incredible industry. We have incredible technology developed in the area that is not only contributing to our quality of life but is also helping us to explore our world and to explore space," Comegys said. He continued," We have a very rich culture that is inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us and that has inspired music and arts and literature. It has brought people to enjoy activities... in every season. We have world class education in our public schools and our higher education institutions."</p><p>"That alone deserves recognition in our state government. It deserves a loud voice and a bigger part in working with the state and how we move forward. We haven't had that."</p><p>Comegys said the lack of strong representation contributes to the fact that in the Finger Lakes "we do still have a lot of people in poverty. We still have people who are hungry.
